Nigerian News Online: WHO – COVID-19 Could Kill Up To Two Million People – channelstv
Without relentless global intervention to tackle the epidemic, two million Covid-19 deaths are’ very likely,’ the World Health Organization said Friday.
The WHO said that the risk of another million deaths was not unthinkable if countries and individuals did not come together to tackle the crisis, as the one million death toll looms in a pandemic that has surged across the world.
“One million is a horrible amount, and before we begin to imagine a second million, we need to focus on that,” WHO Emergency Director Michael Ryan told a virtual news conference when asked if it was unimaginable that two million people would die from the pandemic.
But he added: “Are we collectively prepared to do what it takes to prevent that number?”
If we don’t take certain acts … indeed, we’re going to look at that amount, and sadly, we’re going to look far higher.
“Unless we do it all, not only are the numbers you’re talking about imaginable, but sadly, and sadly, very likely.”
According to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT on Friday, the novel coronavirus has killed at least 984,068 individuals since the outbreak emerged in China last December.
There have been nearly 32.3 million reported cases of the virus.
Ryan focused on the difficulties ahead in the financing, creating, and delivering any future Covid-19 vaccines.
“If we look at the loss of a million people in nine months, and then only look at the reality of having a vaccine out there in the next nine months, it’s a huge challenge for everyone involved,” he said.
